Apple Inc. has recently officially launched the long-awaited upgraded version of the fourth generation iPhone SE - the iPhone 16e. Unlike previous models, this device no longer uses the "SE" brand name, but aligns directly with Apple's flagship series. The new model starts at a price of $599 and is expected to begin shipping on February 28.
A major highlight of the iPhone 16e is its integration of "Apple Intelligence," an AI technology similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. This technology can run locally on the device, providing features such as text summarization, letter writing, and image generation, enhancing the user interaction experience.
Additionally, the iPhone 16e becomes one of the phones, alongside the other iPhone 16 series and iPhone 15 Pro, that supports Apple Intelligence. This is made possible by its internally equipped A18 processor, which is the same as that in the flagship models of the iPhone 16 series, offering powerful performance.
It is worth mentioning that the iPhone 16e is the first device to feature Apple's own modem - the Apple C1. This move signifies Apple's efforts to reduce reliance on chip manufacturers like Qualcomm and Intel, opting instead for custom silicon designed for its devices.
In terms of design, the iPhone 16e has eliminated the Touch ID home button, replacing it with Face ID, and reintroducing the camera notch from the iPhone X. The Lightning port has also been replaced with USB-C, marking Apple's standardization of ports across its hardware devices.
The device is equipped with a 6.1-inch OLED display, and Apple claims it has the best battery life among 6.1-inch iPhones. Compared to the 4.8-inch screen of the third generation SE, this upgrade is expected to attract more users, although it may be a disappointment for fans of smaller screens.
Apple states that the iPhone 16e offers 12 hours more battery life compared to previous SE models, primarily due to the six-core A18 processor. In terms of camera capabilities, the iPhone 16e features a 48-megapixel rear camera that supports 2x zoom, as well as the ability to take 24-megapixel photos, while the front-facing TrueDepth camera provides facial recognition unlocking functionality.
The launch of this new device coincides with a critical period for Apple, as its market share in China is declining. With the rise of domestic brands like Huawei and the fact that Apple Intelligence has not yet been launched in mainland China, Apple's market competition faces severe challenges. In response, Apple is in talks with companies like Tencent and ByteDance to launch localized AI services in China.
Since its launch in 2016, the iPhone SE has performed strongly in mobile markets such as China and India. Although the $599 price of the iPhone 16e is $100 higher than its predecessor, Apple hopes to regain favor among users in these markets with its advanced technology and better value for money.
Pre-orders will begin on February 21, and the device will officially ship a week later.
