Elon Musk's xAI company officially launched its latest generation large model, Grok3, today at noon Beijing time. Musk is confident about this release, claiming that Grok3's capabilities have improved by "an order of magnitude" compared to its predecessor, Grok2. He boldly referred to it as "the smartest artificial intelligence on Earth."
Grok3 is not a single model but rather a diverse family of models. Notably, the smaller version, Grok3mini, is designed for quick question answering, although it may sacrifice accuracy in some cases. Grok3 has shown impressive performance in areas such as mathematical reasoning, scientific logical reasoning, and code writing, surpassing competitors like DeepSeek-v3, GPT-4o, and Gemini-2pro in multiple benchmark tests.
The model's powerful performance is attributed to the technological innovations of the xAI team. The development cycle for Grok3 has been shortened to eight months, thanks in large part to the support of its powerful Colossus supercomputer. Colossus utilizes 100,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs and has accumulated a training time of 200 million GPU hours, a scale ten times that of the previous Grok2, which is sufficient to support the model's rapid processing of vast amounts of data with high accuracy.
Additionally, Grok3 has introduced new "reasoning" features, including Grok3Reasoning and Grok3mini Reasoning. These models can think more carefully about problems and avoid common mistakes, giving them an advantage in handling complex tasks. xAI has also launched a new feature called "DeepSearch," which can quickly scan internet information and respond to user queries in summary form.
Although the reasoning models of Grok3 are still in the testing phase, users can already access these features through the Grok application. To meet more needs, xAI has also introduced a subscription service called SuperGrok, allowing users to enjoy additional reasoning and DeepSearch query privileges.
Musk is looking forward to this release and revealed that a voice mode will be launched in the coming week to further enhance user experience. xAI plans to open source Grok2 in the coming months to allow broader developer participation in building its ecosystem. This series of initiatives not only intensifies the competition with OpenAI but also brings new expectations for the future development of the AI field.
