Apple has reportedly made significant management changes, particularly within its artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics projects. According to Bloomberg, John Giannandrea, Apple's AI chief, will no longer oversee the company's secretive robotics division, instead focusing solely on AI development. This shift marks a crucial step for Apple in streamlining its internal structure and improving the efficiency of its AI initiatives.
Giannandrea previously managed multiple projects, including Apple's AI assistant Siri and the robotics team. However, due to Siri's failure to meet its development goals on schedule, the company decided to restructure its management. Mike Rockwell, responsible for Apple's first spatial computing device, Vision Pro, will now take over the Siri team and its future development. This decision aims to allow Giannandrea to concentrate on developing new AI functionalities.
Meanwhile, Apple's robotics projects will be separated from Giannandrea's purview and placed under the leadership of John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president. Ternus, a veteran Apple executive involved in the hardware development of numerous key products including the iPhone and iPad, will lead the hardware development for the robotics projects, accelerating Apple's progress in this field.
Ternus also currently oversees a team working on robotics and smart home technology, meaning Apple is merging its two robotics teams, further strengthening its R&D efforts in robotics. Apple hopes these management changes will enable it to catch up with competitors like Google and OpenAI in the AI arena, ensuring the priority development of Apple Intelligence.
Apple's robotics team is reportedly developing several new products, including a mobile desktop robot expected to be the team's first release. Furthermore, Apple plans to introduce a more mobile robot capable of performing simple tasks, making calls, and answering questions. These new products will further expand Apple's product line and cater to diverse consumer needs.
